It’s fall and that means many things-cooler weather, sweaters, Halloween, pumpkin, and FOOTBALL! We are big college football fans and never miss watching our favorite team play a game. We even get lucky sometimes and score tickets to watch in person.
But, since we stay at home most times and watch on TV, I love to make it an experience with some fun football decor and a yummy meal too. And who doesn’t love pizza and football? That’s exactly why I head to Sam’s Club to pick up a Coca-Cola Family Pizza Combo for our football watching fun.
As far as the decor goes, I keep it simple. I snagged a few football themed trays and then made myself this personalized football table runner. I love how it turned out! The letters are definitely my favorite detail. Ready to make one for yourself?
Here’s what you need:
One green table runner
White fabric paint or fabric marker
Iron-On Letters
Ruler
Black/White Striped Ribbon
Peel N’ Stick Fabric Tape
And here’s how you make it:
First, you need to find a green table runner. Many stores carry plain colors or, if you sew, you could whip up your own with green fabric and hem up the sides. I snagged one from a local store that was 51″ long and 14″ high.
I put the ribbon on the edges of the table runner first so I knew exactly how much space I had left when painting the “field”. To do this, cut your ribbon so that it’s a little longer than the height of the runner. You want to have a little excess on the edges to fold over.
Place the Peel N’ Stick tape to the back of each piece of ribbon. Because my ribbon was wide, I placed two pieces side by side of tape. Peel the paper off the tape and gently but firmly place the ribbon where you’d like it. Fold over the edges smoothly.
With the ribbon now on, measure the amount of space left and figure out the spacing for yard lines. Next, fold the runner in half exactly and mark where the middle is by creasing it slightly or marking it lightly with pencil. This will be your 50 yard line.
I decided to paint the 50 yard line first so I wouldn’t get it mixed up when placing my letters. I did this by using a ruler and painting my line along its edge from top to bottom. Allow paint to dry. You can make the lines as wide or thin as you’d like.
Once the 50 yard line is dry, place your letters. The wanted to place the letters first rather than painting the rest of the field to prevent getting paint everywhere. Plus, you have to iron the letters on and that would melt your paint!
Follow the directions to adhere and iron your letters. Because our last name is Day, I spelled out “Team Day”. Don’t you love the letters? It’s like having a letterman’s jacket! I found the letters at my local craft store.
Now it’s time to paint your field! This is where you need to do a little math. I hope that phrase didn’t scare you. I use to run in fear when people mentioned math to me (ha ha!). Decide how much space you have left on each side and divide that up by 5. For example, I had about 22″ on each side from my 50 yard line. Starting in the middle, I made marks every inch. At 5 inch increments, I placed the 40, 30, 20, and 10.
Once I reached the 10 yard line, I only had two extra inches. I marked those and didn’t worry about it not being exact. I’m okay with things not being perfect as long as both sides match!
The 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 yard lines were painted from top to bottom while the other yards had small lines, just like a football field.
Once the lines are in and dry, add the numbers. If you want it to look exaclty like a football field, the numbers would be on both the top and the bottom of the runner. I liked how it looked with the numbers on one side and kept it that way.
That’s all there is too it! Let the paint dry and you’re ready to roll for your football party!
