We love baking in our family. My kids always beg to help me in the kitchen, especially if we are making cookies. Snickerdoodles have always been a family favorite, especially when using my Grandma’s recipe. I personally like my Snickerdoodles soft and chewy and these come out just perfectly! My kids love helping roll the dough in the sugar. It’s the perfect activity for a hot summer day.
These cookies are a fun way to bring the spirit of the Fourth of July to your BBQ or family picnic. All you need to add are some Fourth of July sprinkles and you have the perfect patriotic cookies.
I used red and blue colored sugar and Wilton Red, White, and Blue Star sprinkles.
Here’s how to make them.
Make the dough according the recipe (it will be sticky). Once it’s ready, wrap it up in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1-2 hours. When you are ready to bake them, remove the plastic wrap. Dough should be workable.
Combine cinnamon and sugar in one bowl, the blue sugar with sprinkles in another, and the red sugar with sprinkles in the third.
Remove a piece of dough and roll into a ball. Dip the bottom portion in the cinnamon/sugar mixture and coat the bottom.
Next, dip the top of the ball into either the red or the blue sprinkle mixture. Coat the top entirely.
Blue sprinkles are fun too!! The red stars really stand out.
Place the dough onto a cookie sheet covered with a piece of parchment paper. Spread them out 1-2 inches apart. Bake for about 8-9 minutes. When the cookies come out, they will still be a little gooey. If you like them to be soft chewy, let them finish baking a couple of minutes on the pan and then remove them. If you like them harder, back for 10 minutes and let them finish baking on the pan for 2-3 minutes before removing them to cooling rack (things may need to be adjusted according to your oven so just keep your eye on the first batch).
These are so good right out of the oven with a glass of milk. Yum, yum!!!
I’m so grateful my Grandma passed this recipe on to me. These are definitely a family favorite and they are going to be so cute at our Fourth of July picnic!!
Patriotic Snickerdoodles
Ingredients
- 2 3/4 cup flour
- 2 tsp cream of Tartar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup shortening softened
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 cup sugar
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix dry ingredients. In another bowl, beat shortening until light and then add sugar. Beat until fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Add dry ingredients about 1/3 at a time beating well after each addition. When dough is mixed well, remove it from bowl. It will be sticky. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate 1-2 hours. Mix 1/2 cup sugar and 2 Tbsp cinnamon in a bowl. For patriotic cookies, mix colored sugar and sprinkles in separate bowls too. When dough is chilled, remove from plastic wrap. Remove pieces of dough and roll into balls. Dip the bottom half of the ball in the cinnamon/sugar mix and the top in the sugar/sprinkle mix. Place dough on baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Place dough 1-2 inches apart. Bake 8-10 minutes. Cookies will seem soft; leave them on the baking sheet to continue baking for 1-2 minutes. The longer the cookies remain in the oven and on the baking sheet, the harder they will become. For soft and chewy cookies, remove cookies to cooling wrack after a couple of minutes on the baking sheet.
