DIY Birthstone Sand Vase - Your Everyday Family

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and I’m trying to get my gifts ready early this year! I generally spend way too much time researching to find the perfect gift idea and then leave myself no time to make them. Are you the same way?

I’m just a big procrastinator.

Thankfully, I thought of some fun and easy gifts that you can put together last minute. I want to help all of my procrastinator friends out there.

This DIY Birthstone Sand Vase is so easy to do and came together in about 20 minutes. I’m not even kidding! I thought it would be fun to represent the birthstones of each of my Mom’s children by choosing craft sand that matched the birthstone color.

Michaels had all of the sand colors that I needed. Represented in these pictures are February, March, July, and April. Ready to make one yourself?

Here’s what you need:

One Tall Vase, preferably a cylinder shape (this came from the dollar store!)

Craft Sand in your birthmonth colors (found at Michaels)

Washi/Craft Tape

Floral Stems

Here’s what the craft sand looks like. It’s by Creatology and is found near the kids’ crafts. If you end up with extra sand, no worries. There are a lot of fun ways to use it!

First, you need to make sure your vase is clean of any dust and grime. My vase was super cheap, just $1, and the perfect size for what I needed. Because my Mom has four children, I needed to tape off three sections to give me the four spaces for the sand. I used this gold metallic washi tape from Scotch Expressions. I love it! It added an element of sophistication to the vase. It was easy to work with too and stuck to the vase perfectly.

I measured off the sections with a ruler and marked about where I needed to apply each section of tape. Then I carefully wrapped it around the vase, matching up the two ends so it looks more seamless. I used three sections of tape to give me four spaces for the sand. If you need 5 spaces for sand, you will need to have four sections of tape, three spaces equals two sections of tape, etc.

Once the sections are taped off, decide in what order you want to add your sand. You can go in order of each child going up or down or in a pattern… Whatever you’d like, it’s your gift! I did mine in order, starting with the first child at the bottom.

The tape conveniently hides where the sections of sand meet together. It’s so pretty!

Once the sand is in, you can add in your floral stems. I had to cut mine down. I also removed the leaves from the stems and then added them in individually. If you keep the leaves on the stems, it can get a little messy. Doing it this way allows you to arrange the flowers and leaves so that it looks beautiful together.

I used four flowers to represent each of the children too. Again, this is entirely up to you too. I really liked the white flowers because they allowed the sand to stand out.
