Like so many families, cereal is a staple food in our home. We eat it all times of the day, not just for breakfast! In fact, confession time: we have had it for dinner on many occasions. There have been days when I’m sick, we’re busy running around getting errands done, or just coming home from an afternoon of practices or games. On those days, if I don’t have time or feel like cooking, we grab our favorite boxes of cereal and eat away! We use it for snacks at church, in the car, and my husband frequently eats it as a midnight snack. Being such an avid cereal eating family, I decided it would be fun to have a little family party where we made our own cereal bowls! And my favorite cereal to pour into these fun little bowls are Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds. They are so yummy and they make me feel good! When you add them to these cute little bowls, it’s a win-win situation. We also love the Honey Bunches of Oats Honey Roasted and their newest addition, Honey Bunches of Oats Chocolate Gluten Free. And don’t forget something fun, the Kung Fu Panda Po Power Crunch, a new product now available at Walmart. My kids always like something with fun marshmallows!
This was such a fun thing to do as a family. I have found that when we sit down with the kids and get creative, they open up in a way they wouldn’t otherwise. My six-year-old is especially funny and full of a lot of questions! We talked about astronomy, superheroes and their powers, school, sang some songs, and were just all out silly! There really is something amazing that happens when you sit down with your kids and work on a creative project together. It’s something that I realized we need to do more of in our house!
Here’s what you need to create your own Family Cereal Bowl Making Party. I was able to pick up all of my supplies at Walmart.
Supplies:
Plain white bowls
glass paint (I found these at Walmart)
Paint brushes
Honey Bunches of Oats Cereal!
And here’s how you put it together.
Make sure your bowls are completely clean and wiped down.
Grab your paints and brushes. There are a lot of glass paints available now. I used these because they had a variety of colors!
It’s time to paint! Grab your brushes and use your imaginations. I loved seeing what my kids came up with.
Ask questions and have fun! This is an opportunity to have some quality time with your kiddos.
Show off your creations and give them huge props! See those smiles?
Now here’s the hard part. You won’t be able to use your bowls just yet. Depending on the type of paints you used, you will need to cure the bowls. For these paints, we had to wait about 48 hours and then used the oven to finish the cure process. But, if you do this, the paint is permanent and dishwasher safe. All paints are different so be sure to follow the instructions.
Once the bowls are done, it’s time to party with them! This blue one was made by my four-year-old. He decided he wanted to use different colors and “smoosh” them together. He liked using different brush strokes to make patterns.
We made a special family movie night and ate from our cereal bowls. We all loved our new bowls and the Honey Bunches of Oats as our movie night snack! It was the perfect way to bring our family together. Cereal really is for anytime of the day!
