Show your Harry Potter love with this DIY Always shirt, the perfect thing to wear when having a movie marathon or reading the books for the 100th time! And make it even easier with your Cricut machine and iron-on vinyl (it looks like a Patronus!).
While summer is still holding on with its last hot days, I’m getting ready for my favorite time of year-fall! And one of my favorite things about fall are sweaters-comfy, cozy, and perfect for snuggling up and watching the fall leaves.
With my love for Harry Potter, I decided to make myself the perfect sweatshirt to cozy up in while reading my favorite series again. I’m also excited to be joining up with a ton of other great Harry Potter projects for Rae Gun Rambling’s annual Harry Potter Series. This is a really simple project, especially if you have a Cricut Explore Air 2. It does all the work for you! I found a comfy black sweatshirt at Joann’s and chose a holographic vinyl like this one because it looked exactly like a Patronus charm! It’s the Cricut Iron-On Foil in Chrome and I love how it looks.
Next, I needed to find the perfect image to represent my love of Harry Potter. I turned to Etsy for the search.
There are so many great options on Etsy but this one definitely stood out and I knew it would be perfect for my black sweatshirt. By using just the right iron-on vinyl, I knew I could make it look just like a Patronus.
Once you’ve purchased the file, open up your Design Space and import. I personally like to import images as png files into Design Space, otherwise you end up with different pieces of the image. It doesn’t happen with all svg files, but it did with this one. I you do want to change any part of the image, upload as an svg. Most of the sellers on Etsy will give you different file types.
Once the image is imported, decide how big you need it to be. I measured my shirt and set my image to 9.872″ wide and 9.224″ high.
When you have it sized, it’s time to make it. Load your vinyl on the cutting mat and line everything up correctly. In Design Space, press “Make It” in the top right corner. Be sure the image looks okay and select “mirror image” because this is for iron-on vinyl. The mirror image selection is on the left underneath the mat number.
From there, it’s easy going. Follow the directions the machine gives you, being sure to have the correct setting marked for the material you are using (in this case, iron-on vinyl).
After weeding out the image, apply it to your t-shirt or sweatshirt following this tutorial from my friend Katie.
Ta-Da! You now have a comfy sweatshirt to wear that also has a special meaning. It’s definitely one of my favorite moments in the book-seeing Snape for the hero that he is, still in love with Lily.
