In my house, laundry is always a huge undertaking for me! Most weeks, I slowly go through and clean the clothes but they often stay in piles in the laundry room, waiting to be folded, sorted, and put away. I’ll even make a confession here too-I sometimes have to wash the clothes again because I forget to put them in the dryer soon enough! Now that my oldest is six, he has been asking me to teach him how to help with the laundry. While it can be tricky to teach someone so young, there are definitely things that both of my kids (6 years old and 4 years old) can help me do. I created this fun checklist for two reasons. First, my oldest loves putting a piece of paper on clipboard and checking things off. It makes him feel like he’s in charge! And second, both of my kids are still learning to read. So the checklist needed to have fun pictures that could help guide them through the process:
The words are with the pictures because my oldest has started reading and it will be a good way to help teach him words that have to do with laundry. I also added a number to each step because they both know their numbers and can follow the pictures in order.
I will be there for each step to help them and we’ll keep the clipboard and checklist near the washer. The first step is one of the most overwhelming-gathering dirty clothes. I think it’s because the dirty clothes pile never stops and grabbing it all to bring to the laundry room takes forever. This is the step the kids can really get involved in!
Next, they can get involved with sorting. This is perfect for talking about colors! I have a basket for the darks, the whites, and the lights. We have a ton of fun playing this as a game and getting the clothes in the right place. This is usually what our laundry looks like before the sorting-a big mess!
Once the clothes are ready to put in the wash, it’s time to measure and pour in the detergent. This is where I step in. Having two busy and active little boys, their clothes really take a beating! Especially now that baseball season has started. The dirt never ends! Finally, it’s time to put those clothes away! Most of their shirts need to be hung on hangers so at this point, we grab a big stack of them and I taught my six year old how to put them on the hanger. It’s also the perfect time to teach them and remind them that everything has a place in our home. Socks, underwear, pants, pajamas… they all have a place and that helps us find things when we need them.
