Summer vacations are on the horizon, including our own family’s, and we are gearing up for our trip to Disneyland! While we love getting souvenirs while at the Happiest Place On Earth, I decided to make some things to take ourselves to save a little money.
I found some blank red pull knapsacks at the dollar store (Dollar Tree). I knew it would be a cinch to personalize it with our own Mickey Mouse if I used my new favorite craft item-heat transfer vinyl. There is so much you can do with it! And my friends over at Expressions Vinyl have a great selection of vinyl, including glitter. I go a little crazy when I buy vinyl. There is so much you can do with it!
I chose not to add my kids’ names to the knapsack, just as a precaution. Instead, I had them say “Mickey’s Best Friend”.
I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut the images I needed out of the heat transfer vinyl. You can’t buy Disney images so I had to grab a png file from Google. The font I used is called Waltograph. The file I found ended up working perfectly because it had an outline that was cut too for Mickey’s face. I’m including the cutting files at the end if you don’t want to have to do the work yourself.
The great thing about heat transfer vinyl is that you can layer it. I didn’t want Mickey having red in his face, so I needed to add the white vinyl on the bottom layer. When you are layering, you only need to apply the heat for a few seconds before adding on the next layer. The bottom layer is white smooth vinyl, the top is black glitter vinyl, and the lettering was made from gold glitter vinyl. When you cut your image, make sure to flip it so it’s the mirror image or it will end up backwards when you iron it.
This project took less than 3o minutes to make and my kids love it. We are going to be well prepared for our little trip. They will be the perfect bags to stow away new stuffed animals and souvenirs.
If you are planning on taking your kids to Disneyland like we are, you need to plan your family trip with Get Away Today. They are THE experts, they have been doing for 25 years, in all thing Disney and can help you create the perfect vacation for you and your family. My favorite thing about them is that they have a great Layaway Plan. You only have to put $125 down at the time of booking and then have until 2 weeks before you travel to complete the payments. It makes these vacations so doable!
And here are the cutting files:
