My Favorite Christmas Books & Movies of 2015

There are so many wonderful traditions at Christmas! Since starting our own family, we have been working on our own traditions. While I’m still working some of them out, there is one thing that I have been doing since I was a little girl and that I have continued as an adult. I started collecting Christmas poems and stories ages ago, and still have some of them, and every year I add at least one more to the mix. That now includes Christmas movies too! I love reading and watching them, as they help relieve some of the stresses of the holidays and put everything back into perspective.

They also make wonderful gifts for friends and family and I find myself stopping at the bookstore multiple times each year to pick things up. Here are some of my favorite finds of this season that you can still get now to add to your own family’s collection or to use as gifts. These can all be purchased from Deseret Book.

All About Christmas– This hard cover book is stuffed with stories, songs, poems, Christmas history, joyful traditions, recipes, and activities. This delightful book celebrates all things Christmas – from the sacred story of the Nativity to the lore of Saint Nick. It really is the perfect book for a collector like me because it has so much great stuff in it! We have been reading the stories and have tried a couple of the recipes too. It’s been a fun family activity!
Words of Christmas: Savoring the True Meaning of the Season One Word at a Time– This beautifully designed book takes a closer look at twenty-five words, like hope, faith and joy, that we hear throughout the holidays. I really enjoyed this book because I’ve never looked at some of the deeper meanings behind these words. We hear them year after year, but I’ve never stopped to really think about their meaning. Words are powerful and this has added some special meaning to the holidays this year.
Christus Marble 3 inch statue–  I know this isn’t a book or movie but I couldn’t resist putting it in my favorites for the year. This beautiful statue isn’t a book but it’s going to be a stocking stuffer for our kids this year. At just 3 inches tall, it fits perfectly on their shelf. I also grabbed some as gifts for the people I work with in primary at church as well as some neighbors. It’s affordable, full of meaning, and something they won’t be getting from anywhere else.
A Songbook for LDS Families highlights eighteen beloved and well-known songs, as well as twenty-eight newly penned Book of Mormon hymns composed by Janice Kapp Perry with text by Bonnie Hart Murray. This book is inspiring and absolutely beautful! Music is a big part of our family; my husband’s family has a musical legacy and that’s continued in our family too. I also play the piano and sing. I really loved reading about these songs and enjoyed the artwork that accompanied it. Truly, this is the perfect gift for any music lover and a nice addition to our family collection. My kids sat down with it and opened it up and we sang through the songs while they enjoyed the art. It’s perfect for Family Home Evening!

My son adored this movie. It could be because the little boy in it is similar in age, but, whatever the reason, he loved it and he understood the message behind it. The little boy shows so much faith and a miracle happens that changes his life. It was the perfect movie for family night and conveyed the message of the Christmas season.

I adored this movie. Rebekah is a sweet little girl with a pure heart who hears the messages of Jesus and brings Him home to meet her family, including her blind grandfather. We see the miracles of Jesus and how He changes lives. My kids understood the power that Jesus had to help people and we were able to talk about faith as well. Another beautifully done short film that will be watched in our family year after year as a reminder of our Savior and what He can do for us.
