A few months ago, right before Peanut was born, I was called back to Young Women’s (an organization in my church for young women 12-18) as one of the Personal Progress advisors. I was so excited! When they released me as secretary last September, it came out of nowhere and I was pretty upset, to say the least. I loved Young Women’s but it’s what the Lord wanted. So being back was fantastic!

I will say that it took some time for me to figure out this calling. The program has changed so much since I was in it, and I couldn’t quit figure out what our role as advisors should be. However, our presidency was excited to hand us the reins and let us have at it.

One of the things we are continuing to do is having a monthly value highlighted. As part of that, we have our treat jar coordinated with that value. The girls get to choose a treat if they worked on something in their Personal Progress during the week. This month was perfect-Choice & Accountability. Orange goes good with Halloween! I bought some taffy from Orson Gygi, a huge, big ole’ bag of it! I did want to do something different from our treat jar. Halloween is such a fun time of year and I saw this Witch Hat Halloween Countdown from Simply KellyB and decided to adapt that to Personal Progress.

Personal Progress Witch Hat
1 ea paper mache with hat (I found mine at Michaels)
2 ea 12×12 Halloween cardstock
Hole Punch
Ribbons of different colors
Glue or Adhesive
(Again, sorry for the lack of pictures. I did this project at midnight!)
I started by spray painting the hat black. Spray Paint is so much easier than use acrylic paint on paper mache. Next, I punched holes in the rim of the hat at random. If you’re super particular you could count or do it in a pattern. I didn’t, maybe because it was so late when I made this. Then, I put the paper around the cone part of the hat. This was a little tricky because I had to figure out how much to cut. In order to make the right shape to fit the cone, it helps to have a pattern for a cone shape. It’s too hard for me to explain. I cut one out, guessing on the height but it was too tall (better to error on the big size). So, I trimmed it a little at a time until I found the right height and adhered the paper, after wrapping it around, with wood glue. I love wood glue! Works like a charm. I then wrapped a piece of black ribbon around the bottom of the cone and adhered with hot glue.
I created a paper medallion out of my other piece of cardstock. I cut the paper into 3×12″ strips, used my scoring tool to scor the folds at 1/2″ intervals, folded them accordian style and adhered them together. For a great tutorial on medallions, check out Simply KellyB’s.
To the front of the medallion, I adhered my little witches saying. It reads “Personal Progress-Witch value treat will you chews? No matter your choice, you will not lose!” I said “chews” because I used taffy and tootsie rolls and because the value is “Choice and Accountability”. Yep, I’m clever like that. The girls definitely think I’m cheesy! I’m also very generous because I’ve included the file as a freebie for your own Personal Progress treat!
The final step to this little hat is to add the candy. I threaded pieces of ribbon around the brim by taking one end up through a hole and the other at another hole, putting a piece of candy between them, and tying a know at the top. The girls can easily slide the candy out of the ribbon and new pieces can be added to replace them too. It’s a fun alternative to a plain old treat jar!
