Being in the primary has been full of challenges. We meet once a month and it’s never shorter than two hours! There are so many things to go over and plan. One of those things is what to get for birthday gifts for the kiddos. We try to have fun with it and be creative as well. Because the focus was on scripture reading this year, I came up with these cute little “Scripture Cuddle Monsters” that are a fun scripture reading companion.
I found these adorable monsters from Oriental Trading Company. Aren’t they cute? When I saw them in my mailing, I knew I needed to do something with them. They come in three colors and you receive a dozen per order. We don’t have a very large primary and only needed 4 dozen. If you are on their email list, Oriental Trading often has coupons and specials that they send out to their list, including free shipping.
In addition to the monsters, all you need is a printer and printable Iron-On transfer paper. There are different types of paper. The one that I used is the dark Iron-On transfer material. The dark paper blends in with the background so any white that is showing when you print, disappears and takes on the color behind it. If you use the light fabric transfer material, the white area stays. It’s really up to you but I thought the dark material looked more professional.
If you are able, change the settings on the print screen that pops up on your computer. Most settings will have something that says “Fabric Transfer” or “Iron-On Transfer Paper” for the paper type. Be sure to follow directions and put the transfer paper in the right way. The transfer paper has lines on the back of it to help you know which part you don’t want to print on.
You do NOT need to have the image mirrored for the material unless it tells you to in the directions that it comes with. I found mine at Michaels. If you should need to use the mirrored image, I’m including a sheet with the download that is mirrored.
Follow the directions to iron on your fabric transfer sheets after you have cut them out. I did leave a little bit of an edge around the blue circle because, when trying to take the backs off, some of the ink rubbed off on my fingers. You have to be patient when taking off those backs!
Be sure to flatten out the image well, use the parchment sheet that comes in the kit (and if you lose it, you can use regular parchment paper), and iron it on for about 10 seconds. It doesn’t take long! I also cut the tags off the sides of the monsters since they were a little large and in the way!
