In our family, we love gathering around the TV over the holidays and enjoying our favorite holiday movies while snacking on treats. Every year, I like to find a new movie to add to our holiday favorites list. Some are funny, some are purely entertaining, and others pull on your heart strings and make you think.
This year, it was time to add a movie that would share the spirit of the holidays and teach our kiddos the principles of love, service, and faith. “Miracle Maker: A Christmas Tale” fit all of the categories I was looking for and is our new family favorite.
The movie weaves many messages into the stories of the citizens of a small town, all of whom are dealing with their own struggles. Some were dealing with loss, some struggling to forgive, some with physical or mental disabilities, and all but the one family dealing with the stress of not having enough money. It was easy to find someone with whom to empathize in the town. All of them had lost hope, all except a small boy who took the initiative to ask for a miracle maker to help their town.
The message that stood out the most to me was the idea that miracles don’t have to be huge, life changing events. When we talk of miracles, we sometimes get caught up in the stories that talk of people being healed from a sickness or being saved from a near-death experience. However, miracles happen every day and most are so small that we don’t see their direct effect until years later. Time always helps us to stand back and see the larger picture, and that’s exactly what the Miracle Maker was able to do for the people in this town. He knew that doing small things would yield miraculous results.
This movie has now been added to our stack of classic Christmas movies. My children were touched by the small acts of service they saw in this movie and our oldest son immediately set out to do his own service immediately after watching. That right there made the movie entirely worth it!
If you love a good story with a touching message, this is definitely the movie for you. It makes the perfect activity for a family night on a cold evening and teaches a beautiful Christmas story that we all need to remember at this time of year.
